Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation increases breast volume with implants or fat transfer to achieve a proportionate and aesthetic appearance.
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is a plastic surgery procedure that enhances breast volume and shape using silicone or saline implants, restoring proportional balance. With the right implant selection and surgical planning, extremely natural-looking and long-lasting results are achieved.
What Is Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Breast augmentation offers a permanent solution for women with small, misshapen, or asymmetric breasts. Today's highly cohesive silicone gel implants provide a natural feel and appearance while maintaining their shape for many years.
The implant placement, size, and incision site are determined together based on the patient's anatomy and expectations. The procedure takes approximately 1–2 hours, and hospital stay typically does not exceed one night.
Who Is a Candidate?
- Women dissatisfied with their breast volume who have a naturally small breast structure
- Those experiencing volume loss due to breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging
- Those with noticeable asymmetry between breasts
- Those seeking a more balanced appearance in terms of body proportions
- Individuals aged 18 or older whose general health is suitable for surgery
- Women with realistic expectations who are non-smokers or willing to quit
Implant Options
Silicone Gel Implant
The most commonly preferred implant type. Highly cohesive silicone gel provides softness and movement similar to natural breast tissue. It offers durability, longevity, and a natural feel.
Saline-Filled Implant
Contains sterile saline solution; it can be placed through a small incision, and in the event of a leak, the fluid is safely absorbed by the body. However, it does not feel as natural as silicone.
Anatomical (Teardrop) vs. Round Implant
Anatomical implants are preferred for a natural look with emphasis on lower pole fullness, while round implants are chosen by those who desire upper pole fullness.
Implant Placement Positions
- Submuscular (under the muscle): The implant is placed beneath the pectoral muscle; it provides a more natural appearance and lower capsular contracture risk.
- Subglandular (under the gland): Placed between the breast gland and muscle; recovery time is shorter, but capsular contracture risk is slightly higher.
- Dual Plane: A combination of both techniques; provides the most natural shape and coverage.
Incision Site Options
- Inframammary (from below): The most common incision made through the breast fold; offers full control and a concealed scar.
- Periareolar (around the nipple): Made along the edge of the areola; the scar blends with the areola color.
- Axillary (underarm): Made through the armpit; leaves no scar on the breast.
Procedure Steps
1. Consultation and Sizing
Size selection is made using 3D simulation or test implants; expectations and the appropriate surgical plan are determined.
2. Anesthesia
General anesthesia is administered. The procedure takes 1–2 hours.
3. Pocket Creation and Implant Placement
Through the chosen incision site, an implant pocket is created and the implant is inserted.
4. Symmetry Check and Closure
Symmetry is assessed; incisions are closed with fine sutures. A sterile dressing is applied.
Advantages of Breast Augmentation
- Permanent volume: Implants maintain their shape for decades
- Natural appearance: Highly cohesive gel provides a natural feel
- Symmetry correction: Volume difference between the two breasts is eliminated
- Body balance: Waist-hip-chest proportions are improved
- Confidence boost: Clothing options expand, and quality of life improves
Recovery Process
- Days 1–3: Heaviness and tightness in the chest are normal; managed with pain relievers
- Day 7: Sutures are removed; short walks can be resumed
- Weeks 2–3: Light activities can be resumed
- Weeks 4–6: Exercise and sports activities can be started
- Months 3–6: Implants settle, and the final shape becomes defined
Before and After Surgery
Before
- Blood thinners and aspirin should be discontinued 10 days prior
- Smoking must be stopped 3 weeks before; it directly affects healing
- Mammography and clinical breast examination are recommended
After
- A surgical bra should be worn for the first 4–6 weeks
- Avoid raising arms above the head for the first 2 weeks
- Sleeping position: on the back or slightly elevated during the first weeks
- Sun exposure and hot showers should be limited during the first month
