Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a procedure that surgically corrects excess skin, muscle, and fat tissue on the upper and/or lower eyelids, providing a younger, more rested, and open gaze. It can address both aesthetic and functional vision problems.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

With aging, skin sagging and a feeling of heaviness over the eyes can develop on the upper eyelids, while fat herniation on the lower eyelids can cause bags and dark circles. These changes make the person appear tired, older, and sullen.

Blepharoplasty involves removing excess skin through an incision hidden in the natural crease on the upper lid; on the lower lid, it involves repositioning fat tissue through the lash line crease or a transconjunctival (inside the eye) approach. The procedure is completed within 1-2 hours.

Blepharoplasty Methods

Upper Blepharoplasty

Excess skin, muscle, and if necessary, fat tissue is removed through an incision along the natural crease line of the eyelid. The scar is completely hidden within this crease.

Lower Blepharoplasty (Skin Approach)

Excess skin and fat bags are corrected through an incision just below the lower lash line. Preferred for those with significant skin excess.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty

With this method performed from inside the eye, no external scar remains. It is the ideal option for fat bags, especially in younger patients.

Procedure Steps

1. Planning

The degree of eyelid sagging, fat presence, and asymmetry are evaluated; upper, lower, or combined procedures are planned.

2. Anesthesia

Local anesthesia + sedation is administered. The patient is awake but feels no pain.

3. Skin and Fat Adjustment

The identified excess skin and/or fat tissue is precisely removed or re-draped.

4. Closure

Very fine absorbable sutures or adhesive strips are used for closure. Scars remain within the crease.

Before and After Surgery

Before

• Blood thinners, aspirin, and vitamin E should be discontinued 10 days before
• Inform your surgeon if you use eye drops or contact lenses
• Smoking should be stopped 3 weeks before

After

• Sleep with your head elevated on the first night
• Cold compresses reduce swelling during the first 48 hours
• Eye makeup should not be applied for 2 weeks
• Contact lenses should not be worn for 2 weeks
• Use sunglasses and SPF 50 for 1 month
